Conditions ripe for prime Texas dove hunting

While most Texans are sweltering under a brutal August heat wave, savvy dove hunters will gladly suffer along providing conditions don’t change before the Sept. 1 season opener.

A hot, dry landscape heading into the season can concentrate dove around feeding and watering areas, making for excellent hunting, according to wildlife biologists with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. In addition to prime conditions heading into the opener, dove populations have thrived this year thanks to the amount and timing of spring rains across most of the state that kicked habitat into high gear for dove breeding season.
“With the abundant highly-preferred dove foods available on the landscape this year, we’re seeing excellent production,” said Owen Fitzsimmons, TPWD dove program leader. “White-winged dove production, in particular, has been very high in the southern half of the state. Plus, many of the states to the north had similar spring habitat conditions, which should result in a strong influx of migrant birds for Texas later in the season. I’m excited about the prospects this season, it should be fantastic.”

Dove hunting is huge in Texas, with a deep culture that spans generations. Each fall, more than 300,000 Texas hunters take to the field where they harvest nearly one third of all mourning doves taken nationwide each year -- on average an estimated 10 million birds -- far more than any other state. While those statistics may appear staggering, consider Texas supports breeding populations of over 34 million mourning and 10 million white-winged doves, and those numbers rise even higher during the fall when birds from northern latitudes funnel south.

Special Dove Hunting Opportunities Available for 2019 Season, California Department of Fish and Wildlife Says

California’s dove hunting season is rapidly approaching, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is now accepting applications for dove hunts throughout the state on both public land and private ranches.

Hunters are reminded that nonlead ammunition is now required for hunting doves and taking wildlife anywhere in California with a firearm.

The first half of the split dove season will be open statewide from Sept. 1-15, 2019. The second half will be open statewide from Nov. 9 through Dec. 23, 2019.

For mourning dove and white-winged dove, the daily bag limit is 15, up to 10 of which may be white-winged doves. The possession limit is triple the daily bag limit. There is no limit for spotted dove or ringed dove, but the season dates are the same as for mourning dove and white-winged dove. Eurasian collared-dove is the only dove species that can be hunted year-round, with no bag or possession limit.

Several dove hunting opportunities are available by drawing only throughout California for the upcoming dove season as part of CDFW’s Upland Game and SHARE programs.

Special drawings for public land dove hunting opportunities through the Upland Game Bird Hunting program will be available at the following locations:
  • Merced and Stanislaus counties: North Grasslands Wildlife Area (China Island and Salt Slough units), Los Banos Wildlife Area
  • Sacramento County: Cosumnes River Preserve
  • Fresno County: Pilibos Unit of the Mendota Wildlife Area
  • San Diego County: San Felipe Wildlife Area
  • San Luis Obispo County: North Chimineas Ranch, Carrizo Plains Ecological Reserve
Drawings for limited public access to private lands through the SHARE Program will be available at the following locations:
  • Santa Barbara County: Harrington Farms, Jones Ranch and Sleepy Creek Ranch
  • Tulare County: Hart Ranch
Hunters can apply for these opportunities online, at CDFW license sales offices, through retail license agents or by calling (800) 565-1458.
Additional information can be found at www.wildlife.ca.gov/hunting/upland-game-birds/hunts and www.wildlife.ca.gov/hunting/share.

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Leasing Fields for 2019 Dove Season

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is seeking fields to lease for the upcoming 2019 dove season. The first segment of dove season opens at noon on Sunday, September 1st.
Mourning doves are a popular game bird and one of the most widely distributed and abundant birds in North America. More mourning doves are harvested than all other migratory bird species combined in 39 of the continental states. In Tennessee, an estimated 19,000 hunters harvested approximately 334,000 mourning doves last year.

Preparing A Dove Field To Become A Dove Magnet

Jeff Dennis | Originally published in GameKeepers: Farming for Wildlife Magazine. To subscribe, click here.

Dove hunting can mean a great deal of things to those who have spent time in a prepared field over the years in pursuit of this small, grey bird. Retrieving dogs are in play, perhaps football updates on your smartphone, and some of the best opportunities of the year to give a shout out to someone who made a good shot. Making these scenarios come to life requires a commitment of time, money and land management knowledge - to first attract doves to your field and then have them imprint so they keep making annual return visits.

What makes a dove field draw doves like a magnet? Certainly location has a great deal to do with it, a generous food source is also necessary, but sometimes it takes smaller land management tweaks along the way to improve your dove field. Over time, experienced land managers recognize when the field needs some disking, mowing or burning in order to tune it up. Then, it takes follow-up scouting with “boots on the ground” after each field manipulation to better understand what is effective for your field. Larger fields of 15 acres or more, in agricultural production areas that produce peanuts, wheat or corn likely already attract doves, and the task is simply how to congregate them into a small enough area to hunt. These larger types of areas are more likely to yield multiple hunts over the course of the hunting season and can usually accommodate more hunters. Contacts with these farming operations are cultivated over time by discerning dove hunters.
Smaller fields of five acres or less have a limited amount of food to offer, but they can also be hotspots that yield one or two very good hunts each fall. An area as small as three acres, perhaps along a powerline right-of-way could be an option for small acreage landowners who would like to try and attract some doves, but this smaller zone might only support one or two guns during a hunt. The point is that if you want to try and attract doves then let your conscience be your guide.
Like so many other habitat management objectives, a dove field needs a commitment of multiple years in order to derive consistent success. A well-managed dove field  can provide benefits to all wildlife, before, during and after the hunting season. When you begin to notice numerous species of wildlife utilizing your dove field all year long, that’s the true reward for all your efforts.

S.C. mourning dove hunt season kicks off Sept. 2 2019

Though it may likely be very warm, thousands of wing-shooters should nonetheless be eager to take the field for the start of the mourning dove hunting season in South Carolina in early September.

For many in these parts and throughout South Carolina, the opening day of dove season is synonymous with the beginning of fall and all of the outdoor activities that come with it, and if the weather cooperates, this year’s bird harvests promise to be plentiful, according to biologists with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR).
“We just recently completed our annual pre-season mourning dove survey,” said Michael W. Hook, coordinator for the SCDNR’s Small Game program. “The current estimated dove population should provide very good September hunts provided we have no widespread adverse weather events.”

Lincoln and Siloam Springs Arkansas Area Public Hunting Fields Added to Dove Roster

by Arkansas Game and Fish
Dove hunting fields near Lincoln and
Siloam Springs have been added to the
Arkansas Game and Fish Commission
private land permit areas.

Hunters looking for a private land dove
hunt this season will find more fields
and 82 more permits available each
weekend in September through the
Game and Fish drawn permit hunt system.

The agency has lined up the same field
it has had for two years near the community
of Blakemore between England and Lonoke
on Arkansas 31.

It has added fields near Slovak (Prairie County),
and near Lincoln and Siloam Springs.

"We had over 1,100 applicants for the
Blakemore field last year," said Garrick Dugger,
assistant chief of the Game and Fish
wildlife management division.
"In response to that, and knowing that a
number of people from all around Arkansas are
looking for a private-land hunts, we're
responding to the demand.

"We know that our wildlife management
areas up in Northwest Arkansas are
hunted heavily. We don't have a lot
of public land there that is conducive
to dove hunting. We have some, but most
of the hunters in Northwest Arkansas go to
wildlife management areas in the
Fort Smith and River Valley areas to hunt doves.”

Starting Aug. 1, hunters may apply for a
permit at www.agfc.com to hunt on any of
the four private fields in the program.
The cost to apply per hunter is $5. T
he draw for all locations will be held Aug. 16, and
applicants will be notified by email.

TN 2019 Regional Dove Hunts

The 2019 Regional Hunts will be:

Region I - TBA
Region II - Labor Day Monday, Sept. 2, Erin, TN
Region III - Saturday, Sept. 7 Rossville, GA
Region IV - Sunday, Sept. 1, Surgoinsville, TN

This is the South, and there is nothing more southern than sweet tea, pit-cooked barbecue and an opening week dove hunt. There’s a joy that comes from finally being in the field after all those days just thinking about it. It’s the first time in months that many will pull the shotgun from its case and smell the burnt gunpowder in the air. When a hunter leaps from his stool and fires, it's official...dove season has started. With great exuberance, old acquaintances and friends re-unite year after year to enjoy the thrill of this shooting sport and revel in the tradition that marks the beginning of autumn in Tennessee.
The only problem with dove season is that it doesn’t last very long—at least not the hot days and hot shooting of those first hunts. We host our Regional Dove Hunt fundraisers during the first days of the season in separate regions. The proceeds of the shoots help fund habitat conservation, youth education programs, and Tennessee’s hunting and fishing heritage. The early dove season is really just an appetizer for the rest of the fall, and that’s probably why it’s as much about gathering with friends as it is about pursuing birds.
